Responsive web design

Ten years ago web designers or graphic designers created online content for users browsing with mostly desktops and laptop computers. In today’s world there are more devices accessing the internet such as smartphones, notebooks and tablets. More than 50% of mobile users in the UK use their phone to browse online. As a result, web pages are required to adapt to the size of the screen. But how can a web designer or graphic designer design a page which responds to the devices’ screen size without creating multiple versions of the same content? The answer is Responsive Web Design.

Responsive Web Design enables a web developer to design a flexible website which adapts images and reshapes the design and layout of the web page according to which device is being used to display the content. For example, with a responsive web design, if you re-size your browser to half the spread of your screen, the website will adapt to its browser’s size by reducing the images and re-formatting the layout of the page. This flexible structure can also be used on a smartphone or tablet.

Google recommends using responsive web design where possible. Embracing technology by offering responsive environments to display your content is likely to score highly with your clients too.
